About ColorAptitude

What is ColorAptitude™?

A digital platform that measures, certifies, and develops colour vision competence. Delivers ASTM E1499-16 compliant observer qualification as a managed online service.

Who should take the assessment?

Colour-critical professionals — paint technicians, graphic designers, textile specialists, automotive refinishers, quality inspectors, and anyone whose work depends on accurate colour judgement.

What does it measure?

Hue, lightness, and chroma × discrimination, attribution, and communication — a 3×3 competency matrix covering all fundamental dimensions of colour vision competence.

How long does the assessment take?

45–60 minutes. You can pause and resume, but best results are achieved in a single uninterrupted session.

Is it scientifically validated?

Yes. Built on OKLCH perceptually uniform colour space. Methodology presented at AIC congress 2026.

Is the platform accessible to people with colour vision deficiencies?

The platform itself is fully WCAG 2.1 AA accessible. The assessment content specifically measures colour discrimination ability — individuals with colour vision deficiencies may receive lower scores, which is the intended diagnostic outcome.

ASTM E1499-16 Compliance

What is ASTM E1499?

International standard: Guide for Selection, Evaluation, and Training of Observers. §5.1 covers viewing conditions; §5.3 covers observer qualification.

How does ColorAptitude support ASTM E1499-16?

Addresses §5.3 specifically. Produces dated, versioned certificates suitable for ISO 9001, IATF 16949, or similar QM documentation packages.

Are certificates accepted for ISO 9001 audits?

ColorAptitude certificates provide the documentation auditors typically look for. Acceptance depends on the specific auditor and audit scope.

How long is a certificate valid?

24 months from the date of assessment. Two assessments are included per seat over the subscription period.

ISO/IEC 17025 Compliance

What is ISO/IEC 17025?

The international standard for competence of testing and calibration laboratories — the basis for lab accreditation worldwide.

Why does it matter for colour evaluation?

Clause 6.2 requires documented competence of all personnel performing lab activities, including visual colour evaluation.

How does ColorAptitude help with 17025 compliance?

Produces observer qualification evidence: documented assessment methodology, defined acceptance criteria, dated certificates, and annual re-certification workflow for ongoing monitoring.

Calibration and Hardware

What is the difference between Tier 1 and Tier 2?

Tier 1 (individual/educational) uses software-based screen calibration built into the assessment. Tier 2 (business/audit-grade) includes a Datacolor SpyderPro hardware colorimeter for measurably more accurate display correction.

Why does screen calibration matter?

Every display renders colour differently. Without calibration, assessment results can reflect the display characteristics rather than the observer's actual capabilities.

What viewing distance should I use?

50–60 cm. At this distance the colour caps subtend approximately 1° of visual angle — consistent with the physical Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test standard.

What are the technical requirements?

The assessment runs in any modern web browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge). A colour-calibrated monitor is strongly recommended.

Pricing

What does it cost?

Individual: €595/year (assessment), €225/year (training), €750/year (bundle). Datacolor SpyderPro hardware add-on: €229 one-time. Business: from €4,975/year for up to 5 seats (€995/seat). Enterprise pricing available on request.

Is there a free trial?

Yes — a 14-day evaluation for business prospects. No credit card required, no automatic conversion to paid.

Are multi-year discounts available?

Yes: 10% for a 2-year commitment, 15% for 3 years. The multi-year discount and reseller code discount do not stack — the higher of the two applies.

What is included in a business subscription?

Hardware calibration (SpyderPro), ASTM E1499-16 certificates, two assessments per seat over 24 months, training exercises included, team dashboard with 3×3 matrix reporting, compliance export, and administrator portal.

How do I become an accredited reseller?

Dealers receive a dedicated portal with client management, bulk code generation, commission tracking, and branded reporting. Apply via our Become a Reseller page.

Privacy and Data

Who can see my results?

You and any organisation administrators of the organisation you are linked to. Resellers see only commercial data — never individual assessment results.

Is the platform GDPR compliant?

Yes. All data is stored in the EU. ColorAptitude acts as sole data controller for assessment results.

What languages is the platform available in?

Dutch, English, German, French, Spanish, Portuguese, and Norwegian.

What happens to my certificate if I leave my employer?

Certificates are issued to the individual, not the organisation. Your certificate remains valid for the full 24-month period regardless of employment status.

How do I change my email address?

Log in, go to your profile settings, and update your email address. You can change it yourself at any time as long as you still have access to your account. Tip: link a personal email address before leaving an employer — this keeps your account and certificate accessible regardless of your employment status. If you have lost access (e.g. your work email was deactivated before you could update it), contact support@coloraptitude.com with proof of identity and we will recover your account.

How do I take my certificate to a new employer?

Your ColorAptitude certificate belongs to you, not to your employer. The verify code on your certificate (e.g. CA-A3F9K2) is publicly shareable — a new employer can confirm authenticity at coloraptitude.com/verify/… without you sharing login credentials. Your full report and certificate are visible only after logging in. Make sure you have linked a personal email address before leaving your current employer. If you have already lost access, contact support@coloraptitude.com.
